This month we feature new works by local artist Matthew Hines. His consistent use of collage from discarded items found on the streets of San Francisco serves as both a love letter to the magic of the City, and a cautionary tale of its shortcomings. The reception is this Friday May 4th from 8:00 - 10:00pm.
A new event we're hosting this month is "Emerging from Anger: A community discussion" with Nick Venegoni, MA. In this interactive group, participants will learn how to harness the power and wisdom of anger, ways the queer community experiences anger, and how to control these powerful emotions in a less harmful way. RSVP to this free event here!
Our monthly dance party will not occur this month but will be back in June so don't fret. Our regular open mic is still on, though.
Finally, we end the month with a special San Francisco book launch event featuring Jeffrey Sharlach's debut novel, "Running in Bed". The official launch on May 22 will be a talk, discussion and reception featuring the author. The follow week, the Magnet Book Club will host an informal discussion among its members. Two literary events not to be missed.

Montly Art Opening feat. Matthew Hines 8:00 - 10:00pm
Join us for our monthly art opening featuring Matthew Hines' newest body of work, Strange Fruit. Reception begins at 8pm and the show runs through May.
Artist Statement
In Strange Fruit, Matt Hines' work uses deconstructed modern mythologies to convey the wonder and horror of life in the twenty first century. Culling imagery from fairy tales, comic books, the fashion industry, and the cult of celebrity, he creates new narratives in works using "low brow" techniques cultivated from a childhood spent in the Rust Belt (markers, colored pencil, stickers) and "fine art techniques learned in art school (painting, intaglio, gilding). The consistent use of collage from discarded items found on the streets of San Francisco serves as both a love letter to the magic of the City, and a cautionary tale of its shortcomings.
About the artist
Matthew Hines originally hails from Akron, Ohio. He received his BFA in painting from CCAD IN 1996. He designed the Castro Street Fair posters in 1998 & 2008. His work has appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle and JUXTAPOZ magazine. He has served several stints as a volunteer TA at Creativity Explored since 2008. He has been featured in group exhibits at the Akron Art Museum, Art for AIDS, and 111 Minna Street Gallery. Past solo exhibits include My Trick Pony and Blackbird. He lives, works, and loves in San Francisco.

Emerging from Anger: A community discussion 7:00 - 9:00pm
Gather together in a group with other queer men who also wrestle with anger and learn to slow it down, to explore what feelings lay underneath it. The fires of anger can be harmful and destructive to our relationships. This fire can also be transformative, bringing clarity to our experiences and forging a new path to our truth.
Participants will learn how to harness the power and wisdom of anger, ways the queer community experiences anger, and how to control these powerful emotions in a less harmful way.
Facilitated by Nick Venegoni, MA Psychotherapist & Certified Hypnotherapist
